The pinnacle for electronics trade shows relative to foreign visitors and participants is Productronica held in Munich, Germany. Productronica in Germany is second to none compared to other electronics trade shows when measuring foreign representation from both participants and exhibitors.Ease at border crossings coupled with its geographic location is the main reasons for a large turn out from Euro countries.The JPCA Show does not draw as many foreign companies as its peer; however, the there is a large turnout from foreign visitors and display booths from foreign companies.JPCA cannot count the exact number of foreign companies at attendance because many of the companies’ booths were reserved on their behalf from an agent using their own name, while others were subsidiaries in Japan.For example, large companies such as Orbotech from Israel and MacDermid and Du Pont based in the U.S. were not included as foreign companies.More than two hundred foreign companies participated at exhibition, and unveiled some cutting-edge and unique industry technologies.
In my opinion, there were not many small circuit manufacturers from Asian countries this year.There were several Japanese companies featuring PWB products, mostly general grade, from Chinese and Thai manufacturers. I observed many private representatives from Asian PWB manufacturers while engaged in presentations emphasizing their low cost and technical capabilities.This could be a hard sell to Japanese PWB manufactures because they have significantly reduced their own costs utilizing overseas operations.
Several major circuit companies from Korea and Taiwan had relatively large booths at the show. Samsung Electro Mechanics, the largest PWB manufacturer in Korea featured many kinds of advanced products including rigid/flex. Their technology advancements have kept pace with those from leading Japanese manufacturers. Career Technology, the number one flexible circuit manufacturer in Taiwan showcased their latest high density product with the portable electronics applications.During an open seminar, they also revealed a unique new technology called “Embedded Active Chip in Multi-Layer Flex”.
Many foreign material companies exhibited unique products. Kolon, a Korean chemical company presented a new polyimide film for the flexible circuits.It is equivalent or may even be better than the high grade polyimide films from Japanese and American manufacturers. A Korean material manufacturer (sorry, I missed the name of the company) introduced a high conductivity nano-paste for thick film applications. The numerical data posted on the wall were much better than traditional materials.
